Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Gules, a lion's head erased Or holding in the mouth a dexter hand couped Gules, embrued Proper.  Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "SPEED ? STRENGTH ? STAMINA" in Red letters.

Symbolism
The lion is symbolic of authority, ferocity and valor and in grasping a severed right hand (the sword hand) in its mouth alludes to the destruction of and triumph over enemy obstacles and forces.  The red field alludes to the fields of battle and martial fortitude.  The color yellow is that used for Cavalry and also symbolizes honor, zeal and successful achievement.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 775th Tank Destroyer Battalion on 19 October 1942.  It was redesignated for the 765th Tank Battalion on 15 July 1947.  It was redesignated for the 230th Reconnaissance Battalion on 8 July 1955.  The insignia was redesignated for the 230th Cavalry Regiment on 21 January 1966.  It was amended to change the symbolism on 28 January 1970.  It was redesignated for the 230th Aviation Regiment with the description updated effective 1 October 2015.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Tennessee Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Gules, upon a mount Vert a hickory tree Proper charged with three mullets one and two Argent.
